We pick up this series in Matthew chapter 17. Over the previous two years Jesus' disciples had witnessed first hand His teachings, watched him play with children, love the unlovely and miraculously heal the sick. They had seen him weather resistance from the religious elite who detested Him. The general sentiment among Jesus' followers was that He was the long awaited Messiah and the rightful King of Israel. But they still weren't getting it. They needed a reality check.

We are all broken, but there is beauty in our brokenness. Because it is in our sin, in the mess of our lives, that God encounters, forgives and restores us. For He is the God of the broken, telling us who we are, not who we once were.
